We want you to use our products safely and efficiently. An important prerequisite is to understand us and our cutting tools. For convenient and easy guidance, we have compiled a glossary for you. Here you will find explanations for all the special terms we use.

To TopBlade access in our safety knives with concealed blades determines the gap between handle and nose. It is always narrow enough for your finger not to pass through but also wide enough to be able to work on certain cutting materials.
To TopThe blade is positioned on the blade carrier. It is held in place by one or more locating lobes. Some blade carriers are also equipped with a small magnet to provide extra hold to the blade when blade changing.
To TopWe call a specific superordinate group of blades a blade category. The designation takes place according to the shape (e.g. trapezoid blade, hooked blade, etc.), area of use (e.g. industrial blade) or function (e.g. scraper blade, deburring blade).
To TopMost of our cutting tools are re-usable knives. We have made blade changing as easy, safe and comfortable as possible, so that you will not hurt yourself while doing so. And so that no blades get lost while changing them.
To TopWith certain safety knives you can use a blade change button to initiate the blade change.
To TopThe blade cover is the small plate lying on the blade. It holds the blade together with the blade carrier. In many of our cutting tools, you have to lift up the blade cover to change the blade.
To TopThe blade holder holds the blade by ensuring a constant pressed fit. The blade holder usually consists of an upper element (blade cover) and a lower element (blade carrier).
To TopThe blade slot is at the front of the handle. The blade extends outside the handle here and gets back in again.

To TopThe blade access (aperture) describes the area between handle and nose, all the way to the beginning of the cutting edge. However, the contact area determined by the cutting channel goes even further. Example SECUMAX 350: the entire area where cutting material comes into contact with the knife - starting at the entrance gate (aperture) between handle and nose across the blade and up to the plastic head of the knife - is what we call "cutting channel".
To TopThe cutting depth determines how deep the blade can penetrate into the cutting material.
To TopWe call the sharpened edge of the blade the cutting edge. We call the far end of the cutting edge the blade tip.
To TopYou use your cutting tool on cutting materials. What the knife cuts particularly well is classified as "main cutting materials". We call "secondary cutting materials" materials that can also be cut with the tool even though the MARTOR knife has not been specially designed for this purpose.
To TopTogether, our products, performance and services provide the guarantee for safe cutting solutions. Our solutions are always customised to a specific "cutting problem", e.g. specific cutting work, a certain cutting environment and/or a special cutting material.
To TopIn the type of cut, we describe how or for what users use their cutting tool. Examples are: cutting with tension, cutting under pressure, forceful cut or saw cut. The type of cut can also describe the result of cutting, for example, “window cut“ or “removing the cover“.
To TopChanging blades is not possible with our disposable knives. You can just dispose of them through the residual waste system after use.
To TopIf a cutting tool has been designed so that it is especially pleasant to hold, we describe it as having an “ergonomic shape“ or being “ergonomically shaped“.
To TopThe eyelet is located at the end of the handle. It can be used to hang up the knife in a secure place. Pulling a cord through the eyelet enables other ways of attaching the MARTOR knife.

To TopThe handle is the main component of our cutting tools. The slider, lever, buttons, etc. can be found on the handle. The blade or the mechanism that pulls back the blade are concealed in the handle.
To TopThe blade normally supplied with the cutting tool is the installed blade. Other blades can however be used. We call these optional blades.
To TopThe blade in our squeeze-grip knives is not released by a slider but by a lever. You have to operate the lever in the lower handle area for this purpose.
To TopSome safety knives are equipped with a bendable plastic material guide attached to the handle at the blade access area. The material guide's task is to hold down the material being cut and guide it to the blade at an optimum angle to prevent the material jamming.
To TopWe have designed the product family of MDP knives especially for "sensitive" sectors such as the food and pharmaceutical industries. MDP stands for "metal detectable plastic". If MARTOR knives made of this special high-quality plastic unintentionally enter the production process, they can be detected and filtered out by a company's own detectors. This is an effective way to prevent malfunctions and contamination, even from the tiniest plastic particles.
To TopA knife nose is to be found only in our safety knives with a concealed blade. In combination with the handle, the nose securely conceals the blade. The nose is generally pointed enough to make it easy to pierce cutting materials while being rounded enough to prevent injuries.
To TopYou can fit almost all our safety knives with an alternative MARTOR blade according to your requirements. This optional blade can be a hooked blade, for example (instead of the fitted trapezium blade). It can also be stainless steel or TiN-coated. Or it will have rounded tips. Considering the approx. 160 blades in our product range, this is only a small selection of possible variants.

To TopWe call a specific superordinate group of cutting tools product category. We have three of these: 1. Safety knives, 2. Cutters, 3. Special cutters (scalpels, deburring cutters, scrapers, etc.).
To TopWe call a sub-group of cutting tools connecting a certain characteristic a product family. These can also be found in various product categories. Examples are: MDP knives, disposable knives, promotional knives, squeeze-grip knives etc.
To TopThere is also a promotional knife variant of many of our cutting tools. In other words, without a MARTOR logo but with space for your logo or your claim. A premium give-a-way for your customers, friends and partners with a high user value and a long life.
To TopAll MARTOR blades are quality blades. Still, there are differences here that we communicate specifically, e.g. stainless steel or TiN-coated.
To TopAlthough we have other high-quality cutting tools in our product range, safety knives are our core competence. They are called safety knives because they are equipped with reliable safety technology: automatic and fully automatic blade retraction and a concealed blade. By using our safety knives, the number of cut injuries can be significantly reduced.
To TopWe differentiate between four safety levels: optional safety (blade retraction and locking), a high degree of safety (automatic blade retraction), a very high degree of safety (fully automatic blade retraction) and maximum safety (concealed blade).
To TopThe safety lock prevents the blade from driving out of the handle unintended. Releasing the blade is usually done with the same element.

To TopIn some of our safety knives with concealed blade, the handle leads into a sliding base. As the name suggests, the bottom of the base slides smoothly over the surface. At the same time, the cutting material is lead to the blade over the top of the sliding base.
To TopWe describe the soft plastic layer that makes a handle particularly resistant to slipping a soft grip.
To TopCurrent examples: SECUPRO 625, SECUPRO MARTEGO, SECUPRO MERAK and SECUNORM MIZAR. All these cutting tools belong to the young product family of innovative squeeze-grip knives. As with tongs, you will find an easily movable lever at the bottom of their handles. You can release the blade very comfortably with it.
To TopTiN stands for titanium nitride, a chemical compound comprising titanium and nitrogen. This material is known for its extreme hardness and corrosion resistance. Our TiN-coated blades are therefore subject to less wear and have a longer service life with a constant high-level of sharpness.
To TopSome of our paper and film cutters are so delicate that we do not talk of "width" when talking about dimensions. Instead, we indicate the wall thickness of the handle, which is 2 or 3 mm, for example - the perfect solution for cutting in narrow slots and narrow spaces in between.
To TopDepending on whether the cutting edge is only sharpened on one side or on both sides, we describe it as 1-sided ground edge or 2-sided ground-edge.
To TopIf you can turn the blade around and use it several times, we call it a 2-cutting or 4-cutting edge blade.
To TopExample SECUMAX 150: It has a separate blade head, suitable for three different uses: cutting, scraping, splitting.
To TopExample SECUNORM MIZAR: This squeeze-grip knife has a unique 3-in-1 safety lock. You cannot only lock and unlock the blade with it, but also initiate safe blade change.
